WCMA Dairy Sustainability Workshop: Carbon Clarity: How to Measure, Benchmark, and Improve Your Company's GHG Impact

Wednesday, June 4, 2025 at 8:30 AM (CDT) to Thursday, June 5, 2025 at 3:00 PM (CDT)

Event Details

Sustainability programs and practices are crucial for dairy processors to mitigate environmental impacts, meet consumer demand, comply with regulations, enhance brand reputation, and ensure long-term viability in the industry.

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are a critical sustainability focus for many industries, including the U.S. dairy sector, and stakeholders increasingly expect companies to actively monitor, manage, and reduce their carbon footprint.

This workshop will guide participants through the process of determining GHG inventory, establishing emission benchmarks, and how to track and report progress in alignment with frameworks such as the GHG Protocol.

This workshop will be led by industry experts from Harbor Environmental and The Innovation Center for US Dairy as well as dairy processing industry leaders.

Participants will explore:

  • The three scopes of GHG emissions

  • Methods for establishing Scope 1, 2 and 3 baselines using GHG protocol corporate standard

  • How to track and manage scope 3 emissions with a focus on the dairy supply chain

  • Practical tools, such as the FARM Environmental Stewardship program (FARM ES) for farm-level Scope 3 tracking and the processor stewardship reporting tool for Scope 1 and 2 emissions reporting.

By the end of this session attendees will have the knowledge to:

  • Understand the the types of emissions (Scope 1, 2 and 3)

  • Determine what tools and frameworks will work best for their company to collect and track emission data

  • Use FARM ES to estimate farm-level emissions

  • Establish their total GHG baseline

  • Develop KPIs to measure progress toward emission goals

This workshop is ideal for sustainability professionals or others responsible for GHG management, reporting and strategy development for dairy processors or cooperatives.
